Hi again crochet friends! Today's FREE crochet pattern is a throwback to the '80's. We have THREE ways to make hair scrunchies! There's a smaller, beginner version. A larger, beginner version. And a larger, intermediate version. Don't be intimidated by the intermediate version though! I don't consider it a beginner pattern only because you will be working your hair elastic inside a tube that you'll be making. It's easier then it sounds, I promise!

I've made 4 scrunchies now and they definitely aren't just lying around the house! I have 4 daughters that wear them! One of them should of been born in the '80's! Lol! She loves scrunchies (she has a collection!) and high waisted jeans! Who will you be making scrunchies for?! Let me know in the comment section below (at the bottom of this page)!

Now without further ado....the patterns! I hope you all enjoy making them as much as I do!

Large, Beginner Scrunchie

Large, Intermediate Scrunchie

Supplies Needed:

- 6.5 mm/K hook
- Yarn needle
- Worsted Weight or Bulky Yarn (Velvet type yarn works great!) Examples were made in Caron Brand Jewel Box in the colorway Canyon (this yarn has been discontinued). Caron Brand Jewel Box in the colorway Lapis (also discontinued). And Lion Brand Lion Suede Prints in the colorway Canyon (also continued). Any yarn will be acceptable substitutions especially a velvet type yarn. All 3 example yarn are velvet yarns.
- Scissors
-Hair Elastic (preferably one that matches the color yarn being used.

Gauge:

There is no gauge for this pattern. Gauge is not terribly important. A heavier weight yarn and hook will yield a bigger scrunchie and a lighter weight yarn and smaller hook will yield a smaller scrunchie.

Pattern Notes:

  1. Chain 2 counts as first stitch.
  2. Slip stitch to top of chain 2 to join.
  3. Small scrunchie is approximately 3.5x4 inches. Large Scrunchies are approximately 5x5 inches.

Abbreviations:

Ch.: Chain
Sl. St.: Slip Stitch
Beg.: Beginning
Dc: Double Crochet
St.: Stitch
YO: Yarn Over
Rep: Repeat
FO: Finish Off

Large, Beginner Scrunchie:

Work Rounds 1-3 from small scrunchie stopping before FO.
Round 4: Dc in each Dc around. FO. Weave in ends. I weaved the end through the top of the stitches to finish.

Large, Intermediate Scrunchie:

Round 1: Ch. 8 (A larger beg. ch. will make a larger scrunchie). Wrapping ch. around elastic, join to first ch. (See photo 3)
Round 2: Dc in each ch. around. Join. Ch. 2. When joining, be sure elastic is inside the Dc. (See photo 4 and 5)
Round 3: Dc in each Dc around. Join. Ch. 2. You will be making a tube around the elastic. Be sure on each round, that the elastic is in the tube when joining. (See photo 6)
Rep round 3 until you've made it all the way around the elastic, being sure to pull the elastic as you're doing your rounds. This will result in a fuller scrunchie and will hide the elastic. I'm not sure how many total rounds I made on mine but I will for sure update with the amount after I've had a chance to make another one. 😊
