Happy Friday friends! I hope your week was great! I'm not sure if I mentioned it last week but...every Friday for the entire month of August I will be sharing a new, free, back to school theme crochet pattern. Last weeks pattern was the Crayon Cuddler crochet pattern. Great to use as a pillow, toy or even classroom decor. This weeks back to school theme pattern is the Crayon Jar Cozy pattern! You could whip up a couple of these and give them to your kiddos teachers as back to school gifts! All you have to do is fill the jar with pens, pencils or colored pencils! I'm sure any teacher would love to receive one! Now onto the pattern!

Supplies Needed:

-Less then 7 oz of #4 worsted weight yarn (you will need 2 shades of the same color and also black). I used Red Heart Super Saver in the colors Spring GreenPaddy Green and Black.
For the pink cozy I used Red Heart Super Saver in the colors Pretty N Pink and Light Pink.
-Scissors
-12 oz. Mason Jar (with or without the lid) 


Pattern Notes:

-This pattern uses US terminology.
-Chain does not count as a stitch.
-Finished measurement is approximately 4.5 inches tall by 3 inches around.
-Join to first st of each round with a slip stitch.
-The written pattern includes instructions for color changes on the green cozy. The video at the end of this post shows color changes for the pink cozy. 

Abbreviations:

Ch.: Chain
Sl. St.: Slip Stitch
Beg.: Beginning
Sc: Single Crochet
Sc Inc: Single Crochet Increase (2 sc in same stitch)
Sc Dec: Single Crochet Decrease
Blo: Back Loop Only
St.: Stitch
YO: Yarn Over
Ea: Each
Rep: Repeat
FO: Finish Off
Sk: skip
* *: Repeat instructions in * *

Gauge:

3 inches at end of round 6.

Special Stitches:

Back loop only:

Indicated stitches will be worked in the loop behind the back loop (aka the 3rd loop). See video below.

Pattern


Working with dark shade
Round 1: Ch. 2. Work 6 sc in 2nd ch from hook. Join. (6 sc)
Round 2: Ch. 1. Sc inc in ea st around. Join. (12 sc) 
Round 3: Ch 1. *Sc in next s, sc inc in next st* around. Join. (18 sc)
Round 4: Ch 1. *Sc in next 2 st, sc inc in next st* around. Join. (24 sc)
Round 5: Ch 1. *Sc in next 3 st, sc inc in next st* around. Join. (30 sc)
Round 6: Ch 1. *Sc in next 4 st, sc inc in next st around. Join. (36 sc) Your work should measure approximately 3 inches at this point. 
Round 7: Work this entire round in the back loop only. Ch 1, work 1 sc in blo in ea st around. Join. (36 sc)
FO dark and change to black
Round 8: Ch 1, work 1 sc in ea st around. Join. (36 sc)
FO black and change to light color
Round 9: Work this round a little looser then normal. Ch 1, work 1 sc in ea st around. Join. (36 sc)
Round 10: Work this round a little looser then normal. This entire round will be worked in the 3rd loop only. Ch 1. Work 1 sc in ea st around. Join. (36 sc)
FO light color and change to black
Round 11: Work this entire round in the blo. Ch 1. Work 1 sc in ea st around. Join. (36 sc)
FO black and change to dark shade
Round 12: Ch 1, work 1 sc in ea st around. Join. (36 sc)
Round 13-17: Ch 1. Work 1 sc in ea st around. Join. (36 sc)
Finish off dark shade and change to black
Round 18: Ch 1, Work 1 sc in ea st around. Join. (36 sc)
FO black and change to light shade
Round 19: Work this round a little looser then normal. Ch 1, work 1 sc in ea st around. Join. (36 sc)
Round 20: Work this round a little looser then normal. This entire round is worked in the 3rd loop only. Ch 1, work 1 sc in ea st around. Join. (36 sc)
FO light and change to black
Round 21: This entire round is worked in the 3rd loop only. Ch 1, work 1 sc in ea st around. Join. (36 sc)
FO black and change to dark shade
Round 22: Ch 1, *sc dec in the 1st st, 1 sc in ea of the next 7 st.* around. Join. (32 sc)
Round 23: Ch 1, *sc dec in the 1st st,  sc in ea of the next 6 st.* around. Join. (28 sc)

FO and weave in all ends.
