Hey everyone! Today I will be sharing a free beanie pattern with you! Please bear with me, this is only my 4th ever written pattern (But first published)! 🙊 I hope you all enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it! Stars And Stripes Beanie (Or Bun Hat)

Materials Needed: 

-I Hook
-RHSS in soft navy, white and berry (Or any 4 weight yarn)
-Yarn Needle 

Gauge:

15 Hdc=4 inches

Abbreviations:

Ch.: Chain
Hdc: Half Double Crochet
Hdc in third loop: You will be doing a half double crochet in the third loop of the stitch (not the back loop). Video tutorial is below. 
Hdc dec: Half double crochet decrease 
FSC: Foundation single crochet (video tutorial is below) 
SS: Star Stitch
YO: Yarn Over
St: Stitch

Special Stitches:

Hdc in third loop: YO, insert hook through third loop of  next st., Yo, pull up a loop, Yo, pull through all 4 loops on hook.
Hdc dec in third loop: Yo, insert hook through third loop of next st., Yo, pull up a loop, Yo, insert hook through third loop of next st., Yo, pull up a loop, Yo, pull through all 6 loops on hook.

Starting Star Stitch: Insert hook through 2nd ch. from hook, Yo, pull up a loop, insert hook unto 3rd ch, Yo, pull up a loop, insert hook through first st., Yo, pull up a loop, insert hook through 2 st., Yo, pull up a loop, Yo, (6 loops on hook), pull through all 6 loops, ch 1.
Star Stitch: insert hook into eye of SS just made (where ch 1 was made), Yo, pull up a loop, insert hook into side of last st. (not the ch 1) from SS just made, Yo, pull up a loop, insert hook into same st. as previous SS, Yo, pull up a loop, insert hook into next st., Yo, pull up a loop, insert hook into next st., Yo, pull up a loop, Yo, pull through all 6 loops, ch. 1. (See photo 1)

Notes: 
-This pattern in for adult size only but can easily be made into other sizes as well.
-This hat is worked from the bottom up.
-Star Stitch round and Hdc round make a complete "star". 
-Ch. 1 does not count as stitch. 
-Slip stitch to first stitch to join. 

Pattern

*Starting with soft navy...*
Round 1: Fsc 64, join to 1st st. Ch. 3. (64)
Round 2: Starting SS in first st., SS next 62 st. Join to first st. Ch. 1 (32 SS)
Round 3: Hdc 64. (See photo 2) Join to first st., Ch. 3. (64 Hdc)

Rounds 4-5: Repeat Rounds 2 and 3. (Repeat rounds 2 and 3 TWICE for larger adult size or slightly slouchy beanie) 
Remaining rounds will be in the Third Loop.
*Change to white.*
Round 6: Hdc 64, join to first st. Ch. 1 (64 Hdc)
Round 7: Repeat round 6. (64 Hdc)
*Change to berry.*
Round 8-9: Repeat round 6 (64 Hdc)
*Change to white.*
Round 10: Repeat round 6 (64 Hdc)
Round 11: Hdc dec, Hdc 30, Hdc dec, Hdc 30. Join to first st. Ch. 1 (62 Hdc) 
*Change to berry.*
Round 12: Hdc dec, Hdc 29, Hdc dec, Hdc 29. Join to first st. Ch. 1 (60 Hdc)
Round 13: *Hdc dec, Hdc next 4* around. Join to first st. Ch. 1 (50 Hdc)
*Change to white.*
Round 14: *Hdc dec, Hdc 3* around. Join to first st. Ch. 1 (40 Hdc)
Round 15: *Hdc dec, Hdc 2* around. Join to first st. Ch. 1 (30 Hdc)
*Change to berry.*
Round 16: *Hdc dec, Hdc* around. Join to first st. Ch. 1 (20 Hdc)
Round 17: Hdc dec around. Join to first st. Ch. 1 (10 Hdc)
Stop here if making a bun hat stop here and sc around. Weave in ends. Skip to finishing. (10 sc) 
Round 18: Hdc in first st. *Hdc dec* around. (5 Hdc)
FO. 
Using yarn needle and tail, sew opening closed. 
Finishing: To make "stars"-Using white yarn and yarn needle, place X's in random SS. 
(Optional) If making bun beanie use pom pom maker and berry to make pom pom for top of hat. Weave in ends.
