Divided Peaks Beanie/Bun Hat

Good morning, afternoon or evening everyone! Today's pattern uses a couple different stitches. The first is a hdc worked into the 3rd loop (videos can be found on YouTube of how to work this stitch) and the second is the butterfly stitch. Directions for the butterfly stitch (BS) can also be found on YouTube. I also have instructions on how to do the BS below in the "special stitches" section. 
I have included directions on how to do a color blocked version (pictured above) as well as a version done with self striping yarn (which can be seen at the end of this pattern/post). Supplies Needed:
  • Worsted Weight yarn: Color A (Dusty Grey), less than 7 oz., Color B (Navy), less than 7 oz.
Self Striping yarn used is Red Heart Stripes in Parrot (Example is shown at the end of this pattern)
  • Pom pom maker (optional)
  • US I/9-5.5 mm hook and US J/10-6.00 mm


Gauge:
Using I hook:  11 Hdc x 6 Rows=4x4 inches

Pattern Notes:
  1. This hat is written from the bottom up. The brim is worked first in rows. Then the hat is worked into rounds along the side of the brim.
  2. Video tutorial for Butterfly stitch can be found here.
  3. Instructions for color block version are included (CA-color A and CB-color B)
  4. On hat part, Sl. St. to first st. of round to join.
  5. Instructions are written for Adult, Child, Toddler.


Abbreviations:
  • Ch: Chain
  • Sc: Single Crochet
  • Dc: Double Crochet
  • Hdc: Half Double Crochet
  • Hdc dec: Half Double Crochet Decrease
  • BLO: Back Loop Only
  • Sk: Skip
  • BS: Butterfly Stitch
  • CA: Color A
  • CB: Color B
  • St: Stitch
  • YO: Yarn Over
  • Rep: Repeat

Special Stitches:
Starting Butterfly Stitch (BS):
  1. Insert hook in next st, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 1 loop (there are now 2 loops on hook).
  2. Insert hook into next st., yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through last 2 loops, ch. 1.


Butterfly Stitch (BS):


  1. Insert hook into first st. *hole*, yo, pull up a loop, yo,  pull through 1
loop (there are now 2 loops on hook).
  1. Insert hook into next st. *hole*, yo, pull up a loop, yo, pull through 2 loops, yo, pull through last 2 loops, ch. 1.


Instructions

Brim:  (CA)
Row 1: Using I hook, Ch.7 (6) (5), sc in 2nd ch. from and next 5 (4) (3),  ch., ch.1, turn. (6, 5, 4 sc)
Row 2:  Sc in blo next 5 (4) (3)  sc, sc in BOTH loops of last sc. Ch. 1, turn. (6, 5, 4 sc)
Rows  3-66 (60) (54): Rep. round 2. (6, 5, 4 sc)
Fold brim in half so working side is lined up with the Ch. side. Sl. st. across to join ends. Turn band right side out so seam is on the inside. Ch. 1 and begin working along top of the brim. (See photo 1 below)

Hat: (Do Not sc too tightly on this round)
Round 1: Sc along each st. of band. (See photo 2 below) Sl. st. to join, Ch. 1 (66, 60, 54 sc) Change to CB.
Round 2: *Work starting BS over next 2 stitches* around. Join to first st., Ch. 1 (33, 30, 27 BS) *Note: One BS is worked over 2 stitches of previous round*
Round 3: *Work BS across* Join to first st. Ch.1 (33, 30, 27 BS) *BS is worked into 2 stitches or “holes” from previous round*
Round 4: Sk. first “hole/wing”, *work BS* around to last st. Work BS in last st. and sk. st. from beg. Join to first st., Ch. 1  (33, 30, 27 BS) *BS is worked into 2 stitches or “holes” from previous round*

Round 5: Rep. previous round. (33 BS)

Change to J hook and CA. Ch.2
Round 6: Hdc in each st. Join to first st., Ch. 2 (66, 60, 54 hdc)
Round 7: Hdc in 3rd loop of each st. Join to first st., Ch. 1 (66, 60, 54 hdc)
Round 8: Sc in BLO of each st. Join to first st. Ch.1 (66, 60, 54 sc)
Change to I hook and CB. Ch. 1
Round 9: Rep. Round 2.  (33, 30, 27 BS)
Round 10: Rep. Round 3 (33, 30, 27 BS)

Round 11: Rep. Round 4. (33 BS)
Change to J hook and CA. Ch. 1
Round 12: *Hdc in next 4 st., Hdc dec in next 2 st.* around. Join to first st. Ch. 2 (55, 50, 45 hdc)
Work remainder of rounds in BLO.
Round 13: *Hdc in next 3 st., Hdc dec in next 2 st.* around. Join to first st. Ch. 2 (44, 40, 36 Hdc)
Round 14: *Hdc in next 2 st., Hdc dec in next 2 st.* around. Join to first st. Ch. 2 (33, 30, 27 Hdc)
πŸ›‘If making a bun hat, omit Rounds 15 and 16. Continue to round 17.πŸ›‘
Round 15: *Hdc in next st., Hdc dec in next 2 st.* around. Join to first st. Ch. 2 (22, 20, 18 Hdc)
Round 16: *Hdc dec* around. Join to first st. Ch. 1 (11, 10, 9 Hdc)
Round 17: Adult and toddler size-Sc in first st. *Sc dec* around. Child size- Sc dec around. (6, 5, 5) Do not Ch. Stitch count for bun hat is (17, 15, 14)
If making a bun hat, weave in ends and you are finished! If you are making a beanie continue below.
FO leaving a long tail.
Using yarn needle and tail, sew opening closed.
Weave in all ends.
